This weekend kicked off the second twenty years of the May Day Biathlon and 5K and crowned first time winners in three of the four individual events. Congratulations to James Haycraft and Morganton native Erin McKee who were the male and female biathlon winners. The 5K races were won by Valdese's Josh Baker won the 5K (which he also won in 2006 and set the course record in 2001) and Marion's Angi Hendley. The weather was a bit cooler than normal which certainly helped attendance, as 242 people took part in the various races, an increase of 38 over last year. We had several 5K runners as with ages in the single digits and six who were in their 70s. young as six years old and several competitors in their 70s. We even had two biathlon participants in their 70s. This truly is an event for all ages!
And we can't forget the Youth Biathlon which took place on Saturday. School teams from across Burke County took part in the event held on the driving range at Freedom High School. If you've never watched this event, it's certainly worth spending a couple hours watching. Some of the youngsters you see in the youth biathlon will be growing into the Sunday event before long--and some of them already have! Thanks to everyone who took part in the 2011 biathlon and 5K. We hope to see you in 2012! The May Day Biathlon Directors, Need more information? E-mail maydaybiathlon@hotmail.com.
